Journalism Terms

News section— These stories are impartial (do not contain the author’s opinion) and focus on campus news, events, issues, topics, and controversies.

Opinion section— Opinion columns are arguments; authors have a position, but it’s influenced and supported by facts. Opinion writers seek to speak with and understand all sides of an issue.

Sports section— These stories report impartially on sports teams and events. Sports columns or sports opinion articles labeled as such may contain the writer’s opinion that is supported by facts; otherwise, sports stories should be impartial.

Lifestyles section— These stories report impartially on trends, music, art, movies, entertainment, and other cultural items that matter to students; if labeled as a column, opinion may be present.

Photos— Photos are used with permission only, unless such use is considered fair use under copyright law, and credit is given to the photographer. Photos are candid and real and are not manipulated or staged.

Photo illustration— A photo illustration is a posed photo used to illustrate a point, or when a candid photo is not possible or not available. Photo illustrations are clearly labeled so as not to be confused with authentic photos.
